Waterfront UTC is a University Technical College for Year 9-13 students wanting to lay strong career foundations in two of the most important industries worldwide, Engineering and Construction. The new build school, located on the Chatham Waters regeneration site in Chatham Maritime, Kent, specialises in Engineering, Construction and Design alongside a traditional curriculum of GCSEs and A Levels.

What Waterfront UTC has to offer:

Through partnerships with world-class employers and universities, our students are given the opportunity to kick-start their future careers with sought after connections.

Working on real-time projects, the UTC environment equips students with the specialist skills, practical knowledge and academic know-how to fully realise their potential in the modern world of work. The brand new, purpose built school is equipped with fantastic facilities.

Students work alongside the University of Greenwich and some of the region’s largest employers to gain the skills and confidence to succeed and achieve their future goals. Students develop the skills that employers demand and therefore gain the qualifications, knowledge, skills and understanding to access further and higher education. As a result, they will be the students, apprentices and employees of choice.

"I have spent the past 4 years studying at Waterfront UTC which specialises in Engineering and Construction. My passion for Construction sparked early on in secondary education, especially as my father had worked in the field. It further developed through the many opportunities posed whilst at UTC to engage with a range of different national construction companies that are based in the Medway and Kent area. I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to interact with Quantity Surveyors at Redrow, BAM Nuttral, Berkley Homes and Willmot Dixon. These opportunities have reinforced my desire to develop a career in the construction industry."

What is a University Technical College?

Waterfront UTC is a member of the movement of University Technical Colleges promoted by the Baker Dearing Educational Trust.

“University technical colleges (UTCs) are government-funded schools that offer 14–19 year olds a great deal more than traditional schools. They teach students technical and scientific subjects in a whole new way and are educating the inventors, engineers, scientists and technicians of tomorrow.

UTCs integrate technical, practical and academic learning and create an environment where students can thrive and develop the abilities that industry needs. To do this, a UTC:

  • focuses on one or two technical specialisms
  • works with employers and a local university to develop and deliver their curriculum
  • provides essential academic education and relates this to the technical specialisms
  • has the latest equipment and technology used by industry
  • dedicates at least 40% of time to the technical specialism including design and building, working in teams and problem solving.”
